Electrical Rationing

Oh la la! To live on just one electrical socket....

The renovation work in our house is in full swing which involves a full house rewiring. Although they have started earlier in the week they haven't finished it yet until other things are done first which means...

A random photo of succulents...
We currently have very little electrical power in the house. Just enough to power the boiler for hot water, koi pond filter, fridge, and one socket, but not enough to power anything else including the computer.

So no computer, no wifi, no tv (aaarghh!), heck we don't even have power to our cooker (which isn't too bad, a perfect excuse to eat takeaway or eat out every night!). This is only temporary though and we're hoping to restore some normality to our lives by the weekend (what is normality anyway?). And if all goes well we have full electrical supply again by early next week.

Had if not for this electrical rationing we would have been on full blogging mode this week, especially as we have so many updates to share including a visit to a most fabulous private exotic garden 'up north', which looked so good it made us feel more like we headed 'west' instead when we arrived there.

And thank you so much to everyone who has sent us well wishes. We're both absolutely fine and so looking forward to the replanting of the affected areas, rebuilding, as well as a few other changes that lie ahead. And thank you too to those who have been most generous to us in sending or offering us plants, your gesture is very heart warming!

Wishing everyone a great weekend ahead and once we're (safely) electrified again then the blog will be back to normal (again, what is normal anyway?).

P.S. This blog was written whilst within the realms of the golden arches...

Mark :-)

  1. OH my! reduced to posting at Mickey Macks.... What a pain. But, it's going to be great when all the wiring is done and take-outs and eating out can be fun. You have a great attitude. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of the 'fabulous exotic garden'... Take care and have a great weekend.

    1. I love that golden arches nickname Deanne, I've been using it ever since I read your reply. Hopefully we'll get the chance to write about that garden this week :)

  2. Wow, your lives have been turned completely upside down. At least this is very temporary and the result will be well worth it. I didn't know McDonalds had free Wi-Fi. I wonder if that's the case in the U.S. as well?

    1. Hopefully we'll get internet connection at home again this week Gerhard, but just to add to the mix now we have limited plumbing too...

We've always assumed that mickey macks always offered free wifi, certainly here and most of Europe, not sure in the US now.

  3. Wow! Free wifi at McDonald's, this is the first I've heard of it. Apparently they offer it here in the U.S. too. Hope you're all powered up soon at home. Very much looking forward to your post about the exotic garden.

    1. We're crossing our fingers we'll restore most of the electric supply at home this week Alison. Amazing how much you get used to internet etc that when it's limited it feels strange...

  5. Enjoy your time away from the blogosphere! Heaven knows you have lots of other things to think about right now! Best of luck with all of your projects!

  6. They have free wifi here in Canada, too, as do many of the coffee shops, etc. Love your "carry on" attitude, guys! I'm sure your garden will rise again even better!

  7. No electricity is a hard one to get by without. I sympathize with you. Seems like way too much going on with you now but you always seem to make the best of things. At least you could read emails with the wifi.

    1. Thanks Cher! 3G on the phone did help wi-fi absence at home for a bit, although there's only so much you can do using it.

  8. I've just now read about your fire! Oh, my! What a horrible ordeal! I'm so glad to hear that everyone was safe, including the cats and the fish, but how discouraging a turn. I can not even imagine what you must feel right now. You had such an amazing garden. I hope most of it comes back on its own, and that all the negotiations you have to do with this sort of thing goes well. Take a break and clear your head. I would have lots of tears to shed before I could think of starting again.

  10. Holy cow that is crazy inconvenient! But so is a fire. I again think of you often. That is my greatest fear I think, having a fire destroy all that I love. Hey were you eating some fries while writing this post? Hope so!

  11. Electricity is one of things that you never think about until you are without :( Still more time for reading, talking and eating out. Look forward to hearing all your news when you're up and running again. PS We sat in a car park next to McDonalds on holiday in France but could not pick up a signal :)

    1. So true Anna, we take it for granted but when it's gone...

Gaz's parents live in France most of the year and if we see any internet activity from them whilst they are there we always assumed they are at McD :)

  12. Some of our best parties were in the middle of a remodel, when no one need worry about a little thing like spilling red wine and an immaculate house was out of the question.

    1. That's a good idea Ricki! Although no room for party at home as so many building materials are scattered all over.

  14. Mark, you have the resilient genetic make-up, good stock! The glass is always half full rather than half-empty. You are lucky electricity seems to have gone serendipitously with the fire.

  15. There is nothing like a major renovation to make one appreciate the basics! I am looking forward to your blog posts when your electricity is back to normal.

  16. And I thought we were having a disruptive time with the kitchen refurb! There have been several fish and chip based meals here while it has all been going on, but by the end of the week we should have possession of the new kitchen, hope you soon have full electrics back, all those blog posts to write!!

  17. What a time of it you guys have had. I haven't been so very active in the blogging world in recent times. I imagined I was going through a stressful phase, doesn't compare with what you are going through.. Glad knickers and the fish are fine.

  18. True, it is difficult to live without electricity. You can do it! It will be good :)
