Pot Ghetto Surprise

Most of our Veratrum collection are currently in our 'pot ghetto' - a place where empty pots and a few plants are stashed away until we've figured out what to do to them. It's not usually an area you'd want to show people around but I'm sure most gardens of reasonable size have this sort of space allocated somewhere.

This 'pot ghetto' of ours will need some serious tackling in the near future for sure but I decided to start and do a bit today and that's when I spotted this, tucked right on the edge and on the corner looking...perfect!

Veratrum lobelianum

What a pleasant surprise! It looked absolutely pristine and perfect, not a hole or a nibble on any of its leaves!

As you can see it is racing ahead in growth from the other potted Veratrums. These plants are prone to slug and snail damage, and it's not exactly living in the best of spots which made me admire this plant even more that it looked pristine.

I had to take it out of there of course, I can't just leave a gorgeous looking plant like that there. I weeded the pot and placed it somewhere that we can appreciate its perfection while it lasts.

Mark :-)

  1. First, I like the term "pot getto." Second, that veratrum is beautiful and pristine! And finally, I'm impressed your pot getto is so small. I'm moving from North Carolina to Washington State and my pot getto will grow exponentially upon arrival. My family is bad about getting things in the ground.

    1. Hi Evan, that's only a portion of our pot ghetto, it's much bigger than what I've shown. I actually got the term from other bloggers :) good luck with your move and yay for a bigger plot!

  2. Such a beautiful, pristine plant. Good for you for taking it out of its obscure spot and setting it somewhere that it can be rightfully admired. I hope that little handful of pots isn't your entire pot ghetto. Mine is exponentially larger and unfortunately, not in an out-of-the-way spot.

    1. Hopefully it's perfection will last for quite some time Alison, and yes the pot ghetto is bigger than what I've shown :)

  3. I love that plant - too bad it doesn't love southern California.

  4. Beautiful! And yes, as Evan pointed out your pot ghetto is quite small, it's just one of several, right? (Please say yes)...

  5. Dear Mark and Gaz,

Your aver atrium is looking superb. These are such stylishly elegant plants but, sadly, difficult to cultivate well. Yours looks to be in the peak of perfection. Fabulous!

  6. OK - now there's a plant which has worked out how to grab your attention. It has mine too - what a beauty. I agree with all the comments above about how small and clean your plant ghetto is... and there appear to be plant labels in there too. Impressive.

    1. Thanks Sarah! That's only a small portion of our plant ghetto, and the rest are even less tidy as well. Which reminds me I have to do the plant labels soon as most of them have faded away...

  7. I'd love to photograph those leaves - they are just perfect at the moment. I hope you don't waken up to snail damage some morning :)

    1. That was a little worry Rosie and crossed my mind too hence the immediate photo session. What surprised me the most was that it had no snail damage at all up to that point.

  8. I have to own up to some dead plants in my ghetto... I'd be rather delighted with that sort of surprise!

  9. Oh what fine foliage but a shame to read that our molluscs friends are partial. I'm so glad to read that you've moved it to a suitable des res.

    1. Really pleased Anna that this time they have left this alone, for now anyway. Hopefully its perfect looks will last for quite some time :)

  10. That's the lovely thing about pots: when something puts on a performance like that you can easily move it to center stage. What a beauty!

  11. Wow, that's stunning! My pot ghetto is rather enormous and now encompases two areas rather than the planned one, thanks to me not getting around to planting most of them out last Autumn. Ah well, Spring is also a great time to plant...
